Improbable Walks Season #6 Episode 3 For the mad month of March, this episode focuses on a party hosted by writer Alexandre Dumas in 1833. This is a portrait drawn in 1829 by Achille Devéria--can't you just imagine him inviting Delacroix to paint wild animals on his walls? Here is "Lions in Repose", to give you an idea of what Delacroix could do. In my imaginary list of historical parties I'd love to have attended, this is very high on the list. Dumas certainly knew how to throw a party--costumes, great food, copious wine, & smart company! Dumas' novel The Count of Monte-Cristo was in large part inspired by his father, General Dumas (for more info on the extraordinary life of General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, see Season #5 Episode 1, part 2 of my Grands Boulevards walk.) Here is the Square recently--my photo-- and an historic photo from the other side of the courtyard. And the plaque dedicated to writer George Sand--which rather snidely does not mention Chopin's apartment at all. Finally, an oyster omelette recipe from Dumas--the perfect breakfast for the morning after this splendid party.
